Electric Boilers &
Immersion Heaters
Electric boilers
are an excellent way to provide space heating
when combined with Photovoltaic cells (PV) to
supply most of the electricity requirements for
the home. They also work well where a gas supply
isn't possible to install, or if you're developing
flats as they do not require Landlords Gas Safety
Checks every year.
Electric
boilers are relatively cheap to install
and take away the need to put in a new gas
supply. They can be installed together in
series to create higher combined outputs
for large scale premises.
The main drawback to such systems is the
electrical supply will need to be 3 phase.
A typical supply can cost between £2,000
to £3,000.

Here
we can see the installation of an electric
boiler supplying an unvented hot water system.
Electric boilers will provide the heat requirements
and hot water for a entire house.
Electric immersion backup is part of most
ground source and air source heating systems
as they will push the water temperatures
up that little bit higher, and work with
the units to keep the entire efficiency
high. |
NIBE VPA and VPAS
with Electric Immersion Backup Heating
With Air
Source Heat Pumps and Ground Source Heat
Pumps there is a need for backup heating
to bring the temperatures of the hot water
up to 60 degrees. Heat pumps can output
temperatures this high, but it is often
more efficient to boost the hot water to
the required level rather than run the heat
pump for longer.
Overview
The water
heater is made up of a hot water tank, encased
by a double jacket of sheet steel. The hot
water tank
is fitted with copper or enamel corrosion
protection on the inside. See table.
The water
heaters are designed and approved to meet
current pressure vessel standards.
Due to the
polyurethane foam insulation the water heater
provides excellent thermal insulation.
If necessary
VPA enables the use of an immersion heater
for sensor controlled hot water heating.
The cold
water supply line must be fitted with safety
equipment in accordance with current standards.
If
the water heaters are heated to more than
65 °C, a mixing valve must be fitted. The
highest permitted temperature is 100 °C.
