Solar PV panels generate free electricity by using the energy of the sun. They are also eligible for Feed in Tariffs setup by the government to make solar more attractive to domestic and commercial users.

Solar PV Panels capture the suns energy using PV cells. Each cell is made of semi conducting material, and when the suns light hits the PV panels an electrical field is created across the cell layers.

Different manufacturers produce panels that are more efficient than others at capturing that energy. The output of a solar panel is measured in Kilowatt Peak (KwP). We aim to install the higher output Solar PV panels as these will, in the long run, give more energy and more feed in tariffs than other PV panels.

Solar PV Payback Periods

To receive feed in tariffs on the Solar PV system, an energy meter is installed that measures the output of the solar PV system. After the energy meter the connection is made into the consumer unit for the property.

Solar PV InstallationSolar PV systems payback the customer in 3 ways. The first is the free electricity generated by the solar PV, this will reduce your annual electricity bill. The second is that any surplus electricity generated by the PV panels can be sold back to the grid.

The main way that solar PV pays back its customers is the Feed in Tariff scheme. This has been run in Europe for some years and in the UK we now have the highest payback per Kwh scheme compared to anywhere else. Each kwh that the panels produce the government will subsidise with a payment.

On a typical 4kw solar PV system installed by Solo Heating, you can expect to receive in total around £1,200.00 a year back taking into account the free electricity generated, electricity sell back and tariffs.

The main cost of the system is the materials, with the installation only taking around 4 days from start to finish. However it is important to use an installer who is MCS registered as you will not recieve feed in tariffs on the solar PV system if you dont.

Solar Panels

The suns radiation is collected by the solar panels or solar cells. As the solar energy hits the solar panels, semi-conducting material creates an electrical field across the panel. Energy at the panel is in a direct current form (DC). All the panels are inter-connected with the final connection being a low voltage cable running down towards the solar inverter.

Solar PV Inverter

The DC current that was collected at the solar PV array now gets turned into 230v AC current at the inverter. Different inverters are used with different solar pv systems, so the right selection of this unit is critical to the system design. Once the current is now in AC form it can be used in domestic properties.

Solar PV Energy Meter

In order to recieve feed in tariffs (FITS) on your solar PV system we need to install an energy meter. This device measures the amount of 230v energy produced by the solar PV system. At the end of each year the amount is read -off and its this amount that gives us the feed in tariff payment. Levels of payment can be seen in the table above.

Solar PV Connected to Consumer Unit

The final component to the solar PV system is the consumer unit. This is the same consumer unit that would be installed in the property anyway. The 230v electrical energy that the solar PV system produces feeds into the property VIA the consumer unit. A separate MCB breaker is installed on the consumer unit to connect the solar PV system to your domestic supply.
